Janssons Frestelse

  1. Heat oven to Fan 180C/200C/Gas 6. Peel your potatoes and then using a mandolin to save time, cut into matchsticks.
  2. Start to layer your dish. Begin with a potatoes, then a layer of sliced onion and then drape over half of the anchovies. My Mother always said, don’t be mean with them. Season with a little salt and pepper and then repeat the layers, ending with potatoes on top. Pour over the cream.
  3. Dot with knobs of butter and pour over the oil from the tin of anchovies. Cover with tin foil and bake in the over for 1 hour and 30 minutes.
  4. Remove the tin foil and bake uncovered for 30 minutes until golden.

  1. We tried the Janssons Frestelse yesterday and it was an instant hit with all the family!

    We almost abandoned trying this dish after my fridge raiding daughter scoffed all our anchovies – but I must say I was so pleased we persevered and made the effort to restock! The finished product was well worth the effort of a second trip to Sainsburys!

    It was easy to prepare and a delicious alternative to dauphinoise potatoes! We will certainly be making this again – Yum Yum!
